Le Grand Macabre – The most extreme, most difficult role I’ve played is Mescalina from Le Grand Macabre. But at the same time, she’s a character I’ve grown to love. When I first looked at the music, I could never have imagined loving the role. But this was also what attracted me to her. And it was also a challenge to dive right into a different vocal category altogether – one in which I had to be more of an actress than a singer. I had to scream as I spoke, sing as I spoke, and simply sing too.
Despite her fickle moods and outbursts, Mescalina also communicates cordiality and warmth – and that’s what makes her lovable to me.
